NZ Wood for a better World
Friday, 19 June 2009
Wood is a natural, renewable material that can help tackle climate change.  Growing trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store the carbon so efficently that about half the dry weight of a tree is carbon.  This carbon remains 'locked up' (or sequestered) for the life of the wood, even when it's used for building products or furniture - for example, 1 tonne of wood in every building contains nearly 0.5 tonnes of carbon.

  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas that makes a major contribution to climate change.
  • Trees absorb CO2 and, powered by sunlight in a process known as photosynthesis, use the carbon to build the structure of the tree.
  • On average, carbon accounts for nearly 50 per cent of the mass of every wood product.
  • For every tonne of wood produced, 1.8 tonnes of CO2 is taken from the atmosphere.
